Headless E-Commerce
Zilara — High-Performance Headless E-Commerce Storefront
Zilara Commerce · 12 weeks · 2 engineers
The Challenge
Traditional monolithic e-commerce platforms suffered from rigid frontend templates, slow initial server rendering, and heavy third-party vendor lock-in with ongoing percentage transaction fees. The client needed a fast, custom storefront with fine-grained control over layout, cart logic, checkout integration, and SEO rendering.
Our Solution
We engineered a decoupled headless e-commerce storefront using Angular with Server-Side Rendering (SSR) and Signals, integrated with a Medusa.js commerce backend. We built a custom Commerce Gateway with Angular HttpClient, abstracting repository and facade layers to avoid direct SDK runtime bloat and ensure fast cold-start performance.
Outcomes
Measurable Results
SSR
Server-Side Rendering
Complete server-rendered product pages ready for crawlers and immediate first paint.
Zero
SDK Dependency Bloat
Custom Commerce Gateway via HttpClient eliminates heavy client-side SDK runtime overhead.
100%
Platform Ownership
Self-hosted infrastructure with zero ongoing transaction fees or template constraints.
Process
Development Approach
Commerce Architecture & Gateway
Designed a clean layered architecture (Component → Facade → Repository → Commerce Gateway) to decouple business state from network protocols.
Storefront Engineering & Signals
Constructed responsive catalog, product detail, and cart interfaces leveraging Angular Signals for fine-grained reactivity and minimal re-rendering.
SSR & Metadata Optimization
Implemented server-side rendering for product catalogs with dynamic canonicals, Open Graph cards, and Product JSON-LD structured data.
Production Deployment & Caching
Containerized the storefront and Medusa.js backend using Docker, orchestrated behind Cloudflare reverse proxies with aggressive static edge caching.
